Smoke and mirrors, Cheating or just improvising?

Welcome to my blog. I am starting my blog with a food phototgraphy post, as this fills the bulk of my commercial photography time, and it is something I love. I mean who doesnt love food right? With future blogs I aim to bring you some insight into the thoughts and behind the lens, ideas of a food photographer. I have been working as a photographer now for over 20 years and have been fortunate to work in all areas of the subject including weddings and portraits.

“Food photography is not about cheating. it is about showing the food in its best light. and the lighting is the most difficult part.”

Nearly all of the food photography work I do now is for Packaging and brochure use along with websites obviously.

Food photography in the studio

Working with food in the studio can be tricky and it can be hard to resist cheating, not using real ice cream or not quite cooking that turkey all the way through. I always strive to keep it real, I do not like to cheat the viewer, it just would not seem right.

I believe preperation is the key to this. Prep ice cream the day before and freeze it down so it stays cooler for longer. Get that turkey in the oven nice an early so it is cooked through, who knows you may be asked to carve it for a later shot.

The main key to food photgraphy is great lighting, and this takes years of experience. In the studio I use many light shapers to create the right lighting for the mood I am trying to create.

Along with lighting, styling and props are also key, these along with camera techniques can help you ceate some stunning results and more importantly images you clients will be proud of.

Over the next few blogs I will go into more depth about the areas mentioned above along with post production and some tips and tricks and everything else.
